Dental Sedation

Sedation Dentistry in Dallas, TX

At our dental office, we would like to give you the most pleasurable experience at our office. Dental sedation in Dallas can comfort you and put your mind at ease regarding dental appointments and procedures. Sedation dentistry uses sedatives that depress the central nervous system, which normally creates a conscious awareness for you as a patient. There are different degrees of depression depending on the amount of sedation used. The amount used will depend on each particular patient.

Laughing Gas

Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is one dental sedation option in Texas that we offer to help make you more comfortable during certain dental procedures. Nitrous oxide will allow you to be anxiety-free during your procedure. Once your dentist removes your nitrous oxide mask, the effects will quickly wear off, so that you are able to drive home safely. Ultimately, laughing gas allows us to complete your dental treatment while you’re still conscious, just in a relaxed state. This also offers a raised pain threshold, which allows us to perform a procedure without interruptions, meaning fewer visits.

Conscious/Enteral Sedation

For those with more serious anxiety about dental work, conscious sedation (also known as enteral sedation) is used. conscious sedation uses a medication called Triazolam (similar to Valium) that is taken one hour before your dental visit. Triazolam calms your mind, and reduces your stress before and throughout your dental procedure. Patients feel confident when they choose oral conscious sedation, and are usually able to not only drift in and out of sleep, but are also able to wake up in order to respond to their doctor’s questions and commands. Throughout the procedure, they remain worry-free.
Our conscious sedation medication has almost no side effects. It is also unlikely that Triazolam will interact poorly with any other medications you are currently taking. However, unlike laughing gas, you will need to have a driver to bring you to and from your appointment. You will also have to avoid eating and drinking 6 hours prior to being sedated. Another person will have to spend the rest of the day with you since the effect of medication can last for hours after your dental visit.
